THX Ltd. has announced its new Media Director feature that will simplify home stereo and home theater setup and operation. Media Director, which will be available later this year, will enable music, movies, games and other digital media to communicate picture and sound settings directly to consumer electronics components and configure them for the best playback experience. THX Media Director automatically configures home entertainment products, based on metadata descriptors embedded in stereo CDs, DVDs and downloads. The metadata can select the appropriate surround sound mode, post-processing DSP mode, video aspect ratio, color, brightness and sharpness settings to playback devices via an HDMI connection. According to THX, Media Director will allow the content creation community to determine how they want their content to look and sound when played back on home stereo and home theater systems. Thus far, THX has selected four partners who will play a role in building the Media Director system:
- Anchor Bay
- Lyngdorf Audio
- Portrait Displays
- Sequoyan Media Technology
With all of the picture and sound settings to choose from, it seems likely that THX Media Director will greatly simplify setup and operation in a typical system.
