2.1 Channel Systems on the Rise

From , Former About.com GuideJanuary 21, 2011

Focal Bird2.1 Channel sound systems with two stereo speakers and a subwoofer are a great way to enjoy music, TV and movies. They require less complex setup and installation and offer great sound without the hassle of additional speakers and wires. Customers like them for their simplicity (and typically lower cost) and manufacturers see them as an opportunity to capture new business. A recent example is the 'Bird' system from Focal. The Focal 'Bird' is a unique system available in three satellite speaker configurations, and all based around the 'Power Bird', a single component with amplifiers, a built-in subwoofer and a wireless receiver. It uses Kleer technology for wireless transmission of CD quality sound between an iPod/iPhone/iPad or a computer and the Power Bird. It packs a lot of features and power in a compact, affordable system.  System prices range from $899 to $1,199 depending on speakers and will be available soon. Check back soon for my full review of the Focal 'Bird'. For more information about 2.1 channel systems, read my article and check out Robert Silva's About.com coverage of home theater.

IMHO, a good, 20 year old 2 channel system has always been better than the typical “home theatre in a box” that most people use.
