How to Sell Used Stereos Online (and Put Some Extra Cash in Your Pocket)

By

Stereo components change quickly and the receiver you bought a few years ago may be out of date, replaced by a newer model with better features. So, what do you do with used stereo components or speakers? One idea is to sell them online on Ebay, Craigslist or, if it is a collectors item, on a vintage or classic audio website. It’s a good way to earn some extra cash or help pay for newer components. Here are some tips about selling your used stereos online.

Selling Used Stereos on Ebay

  1. Research the value of the item you want to sell.

Ebay provides a list of similar items that have either listed or sold on their site. From the home page (ebay.com) go to the ‘Electronics’ category and product category (speakers, amps, etc.), then the name and model number of the product you want to sell. Look for the ‘Search Options’ section on the left side of the page. Enter the options in the search section and click on ‘Show Items’. The result will give you an idea of how much your stereo is worth.
  2. Decide on the amount of the opening bid.

Ebay recommends, and I agree that starting with a low opening bid will encourage more buyers to bid on your item. Greater competition with more interested buyers usually leads to a higher final selling price. Alternatively, you can set a ‘Reserve Price’, which is the lowest price you will accept for the item.
  3. Determine shipping costs.

Make sure you carefully research the costs of handling and shipping, especially with heavy items or for items that may be shipped to another country. When you list the item you can indicate if you are willing to ship internationally. Make sure you have the accurate weight of the item, and carefully calculate the costs of any shipping materials such as boxes, packing, etc. Don’t overstate the shipping and handling costs. That will discourage potential buyers.
  4. Answer questions from buyers.

Be prepared to answer questions promptly from interested buyers about the product and its condition.
  5. Send an invoice to the winning bidder and ship the item promptly when paid.

Once the auction is over and the highest bidder has won the item, send an invoice to the buyer for the full amount of the sale including shipping and handling costs. Once payment is received, ship the item to the buyer as promptly as possible.

Selling Used Stereos on Craigslist

Craigslist may be a better option for selling large or heavy items. Craigslist is an online classified service and it’s local so shipping costs are not a concern.

  1. Research the value of the item you wish to sell.

You can use the Ebay search option for this or view similar items on Craigslist.

  2. Decide on a fair selling price.

  3. Post the item on the site with a good description.

Once again, photo(s) will help you sell the item more quickly.
  4. Answer questions from potential buyers.

You may choose to include your phone number with the listing or buyers can contact you by email – the choice is up to you.
  5. Be prepared to barter with a potential buyer to agree on a final selling price.
