GEORGE iPod Music System

GEORGE Ups the Ante for iPod Music Systems

GEORGE iPod Music System

The Apple iPod has done more to change the way we listen to music, perhaps since the introduction of the compact disc. Following that thought, iPod docking stations and music systems have likewise changed the way we listen to an iPod. iPod music systems range from basic models with stereo speakers and a docking connector to complete stereo systems loaded with features. One of the newer models, the GEORGE will likely up the ante for full-featured music systems with iPod docking capability.

Meet GEORGE

The basic GEORGE resembles a typical tabletop radio with a white finish and two silver grilles covering the speakers. However, this is where its similarity ends with a tabletop radio. The basic white GEORGE can be customized with optional Cherry wood or Natural Walnut wood side panels and a variety of grille cloth colors to match almost any room decor. On the front panel between the two speakers, the GEORGE has a clock with a large, easy-to-read LCD display, eight lighted function buttons, a prominent multi-function knob and a few additional playback controls.

Listen to GEORGE

GEORGE’s robust sound is produced by a 3-way five-speaker bi-amped system, consisting of a pair of front-mounted 4-inch coaxial speakers matched with a 4-inch downfiring woofer and a rear bass port. The bass level is adjustable with a rear-panel control. GEORGE has a full, well-balanced tone quality that sounds more like a stereo component system with a good pair of bookshelf speakers than a tabletop radio. Bass response is more impressive than is to be expected from a 4-inch woofer, vocals and midrange are clear and distinct and GEORGE produces pleasing highs. Even though less than a foot separates the speakers, GEORGE manages a reasonable amount of separation. In short, GEORGE could easily be a primary music system for a dorm room or a studio apartment and makes a great choice for an office, den or kitchen. I’d even invite GEORGE to play tunes for my next party.

Enjoy GEORGE

GEORGE’s sound quality is just one part of its appeal. Its powerful features make GEORGE more like a radio / iPod Dock / computer than a simple tabletop system.

The front panel display is the centerpiece of the GEORGE, and clearly distinguishes it from other systems. When the display is detached from GEORGE it becomes a full-function RF wireless remote control that allows the user to take advantage of its many features. The space occupied by the remote control can be covered with an additional grille piece so the entire front panel has the same appearance. The detachable remote control operates all of the functions of the GEORGE, including volume, tone controls, radio stations, alarm clock, and all iPod functions.

Using the remote control when playing an iPod is like having the iPod in your hand. The remote has the same familiar and intuitive menu/control scheme as an iPod so you can select artist, playlist, track, album, etc. as if you were holding the iPod. The song title and artist slowly scroll across the display while an iPod selection is playing. The remote control charges when attached to the front panel or can be charged separately when placed in the included charging stand. Since the remote control is RF (radio frequency) it doesn’t rely on line-of-sight operation like an infrared remote, so GEORGE can even be controlled from an adjacent room.

Go to Sleep and Wake Up Listening to GEORGE

GEORGE Remote control

The GEORGE features an AM/FM tuner with ‘bandless’ tuning, a feature that makes it easy to store up to 24 stations without switching between the AM or FM band. The current station is prominently displayed in large numbers on the remote control along with the other stored preset stations. I hate alarm clocks, but GEORGE makes the morning alarm a bit more interesting and a lot less annoying than the typical system-shocking buzzer in most alarm clocks. Go to sleep while listening to Ana Caram’s peaceful ‘Meditation’ at low volume and awake to a snappy track from Diana Krall’s ‘Live in Paris’, at a pre-selected volume guaranteed to wake you. Or, wake to GEORGE’s default alarm tone, which sounds more like a ‘your food is cooked’ microwave oven tone than the ‘security-breach alert’ of a common alarm clock.

The GEORGE can be used with external components as well. Its 3.5mm mini-jack AUX input accepts any analog source connection, such as a CD or DVD player, MP3 player, TV sound or ?? GEORGE’s 3.5mm mini-jack pre-out connection allows it to be used as a source for a stereo or home theater system, ideal if your system doesn’t have iPod docking capability. GEORGE also has a headphone output for private listening.
