If you read my article about room acoustics, you know that correct speaker placement is the first step towards achieving the best sound in your system, especially bass. The next step is room acoustic treatments including bass traps. Most bass traps are passive devices that absorb bass at various frequencies and smooth bass response. Bag End has just introduced an active bass trap, an electronic acoustic absorber that resembles a small speaker. The Bag End E-Trap employs a microphone, a built-in amplifier, tuning controls, a 10-inch woofer and the E-Trap circuitry to provide real-time feedback and room resonance mode damping. The E-Trap can compensate for two frequencies simultaneously. For example, if you have a resonance mode at 30Hz and one at 55Hz, it can correct both frequencies. Windows PC software is included with the system to pinpoint the problem frequencies. Once the system is placed and tuned, it requires no further attention. The Bag End E-Trap has a suggested retail price of $1,598.00.
